The difference between furniture and a built-in is that a built-in belongs to the wall: scribed to the plaster, matched to the trim, crowned into the ceiling. It's the highest-leverage carpentry a room can get - one wall changes the whole house's feel.

Fireplace & living room walls
Bookcases flanking the chimney, closed storage below, arched or square tops, lighting over the shelves. The classic built-in - and in a Harding-era living room, the one that looks like it was always there.
Window seats & reading nooks
A bench with real storage in the drawers, a top that can take years of sitting, and bookcases turning a bay or a dormer into the best seat in the house.
Home-office walls
A desk surface that spans the wall, file drawers that actually hold files, shelves for the printer where the printer goes, and wire management planned instead of drilled after.

A TV bay sized to the television, ventilated equipment bays, cable chases behind everything, and doors to close it all away when the room needs to be a room.
Mudroom benches & lockers
A locker per person, a bench that takes boots, hooks at kid height and coat height, and a drawer for the gloves that otherwise live on the floor.

Floor-to-ceiling shelving with adjustable pins, face frames matched to your casing, and a rolling ladder if the ceiling justifies one. Books deserve better than sagging particleboard.

What do custom built-ins cost?
A single built-in - a window seat, an alcove bookcase - typically runs $1,800-$5,000 built and installed. A full wall (fireplace surround with flanking bookcases, a home-office wall) usually lands $5,000-$15,000 depending on size, doors, and finish. Written number after the measure, always.
Do built-ins add value to a home?
Real built-ins - fitted to the wall, finished like trim, wired where they need power - read as architecture and consistently show up in appraiser and agent guidance as a value-add, especially in older homes where they look original. A bookshelf screwed to drywall does not. The difference is exactly the fit and finish.
Can built-ins handle TVs, wiring, and sound equipment?
Yes - media walls are half the built-in work we quote. Ventilated component bays, cable chases behind the boxes, outlets landed inside cabinets, and a TV section sized for the actual television rather than hopefully close.
Can you match my existing trim and molding?
That is the detail that makes a built-in look original to the house. We profile-match existing baseboards and casings and carry the crown through the top of the piece, so the built-in reads as if it went in when the house did.
